Under the guidance and in conjunction with labour and academic groups across Canada, Livingwork is pleased to announce the National and Local Union Survey Development Project. The goal of the project will be to develop a cross sectional survey of all National and Local Unions operating within Canada. The long run objective is to establish an information and research center that documents many of the key dynamics of the labour movement in Canada. The survey will attempt to become a permanent fixture within the labour movement and will aim to be completed every two years.
The survey will be designed by labour with the help of academics and worker friendly experts. Together, the group will for the first time in history put together a framework that will allow for the development of a much needed quantitative perspective on the labour movement in Canada. Outputs from the survey program will be tailored towards the needs of labour leaders, local unions, and union members. However, the outputs will also be quite useful for policy makers, researchers, activists and the general public.
The academic advisory group was announced at the launch of the project and members include the following:
Charlotte Yates, Don Wells and Wayne Lewchuk from McMaster University.
Anil Verma and Peter Warrian from the University of Toronto.
Pradeep Kumar from Queen's University
Sam Gindin from York University.
D'Acy Martin, Centre for the Study of Education and Work (CSEW), University of Toronto
Rosemary Warskett, Carleton University
We are still adding members to the academic advisory group. If you are interested and have the expertise email us and we can discuss you involvement in the project.
We are entering into the second stage of the project, in which we will be actively recruiting members for our labour advisory group. We would like to invite individuals from all walks of the labour movement and will be striving to obtain the participation from the national, labour central, local and membership levels. If you are interested in participating in the advisory group or would like more information please contact us at Livingwork.ca
All updates for the project will be announced on this page so check back often.
